Help members find the right provider (it could be YOU)

New specialties support LGBTQIA+ members

As you are likely already aware, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ experience significant mental health challenges and are at greater risk for suicide.*

According to the American Psychological Association’s 2023 Practitioner Pulse Survey report, “LGBTQ+ population saw increases in treatment; 26% of respondents (psychologists) reported an increase in treatment of gay, lesbian, and bisexual populations and 41% reported an increase in treatment of transgender and gender non-conforming populations.”

And yet, for members seeking a qualified provider to help them with their mental/behavioral health or substance use concerns, the process can be a bit like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack. That’s why we encourage you to share information about yourself, your approach, education and specialties. It helps the members we serve know if you might be a good fit for their therapy or treatment needs.

If you specialize in the following areas, we need YOU to let us know!

  • Gender identity
  • Sexual dysphoria
  • Transgender

Note: The existing specialty of LGBT has been updated to LGBTQIA+.

Are you a potential match? Let members know what you have to offer

Showcase your specialties. This helps members identify—at a glance—their best options for treatment/therapy. Plus, if one of your specialties appears to be compatible with their concern, you increase your chances for getting the referral.

Selecting your specialties from the Magellan master list helps members find the right provider.

Are your specialties showing?

How you can make sure your practice data, including specialties, are current:
  1. Go to and sign in securely with your username and password.
  2. From the left-hand menu, click Display/Edit Practice Information. The first tab that displays is the Provider Data Change Form.
  3. Select the Specialties, Languages & Age Range section to add/edit your current behavioral specialties. You’ll be able to select your own specialties from a master list of over 100.
  4. Review and attest to the accuracy of your practice information on a quarterly basis and anytime you make an update to your information. To fully complete this step, review each category (updated categories will reflect a green check mark), then click the red “I Attest” button.

Why it matters

When provider information is incomplete or out-of-date, this can lead to greater frustration and inconvenience for members seeking timely care. Depending on the region where you practice, a Magellan member could generate a lengthy list of potential “matches” when they conduct a search or ask us for help finding providers in their area. Yet, not all providers may be a good fit for a member’s needs. Sifting through 100 or more provider listings can take time, and when a member might already be feeling overwhelmed, this can seem especially daunting. Including your specialties allows members to filter for more pertinent results and get the care they need more quickly.
