Magellan adopts new guidelines for PTSD, transgender health, depression, schizophrenia and suicide
Magellan’s clinical taskforce recently adopted several external clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). These guidelines serve as the evidence-based framework for practitioners’ clinical decision-making for the treatment of patients.
Highlights of the 2024-2025 changes:
Acute Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Magellan most recently adopted The Department of Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder (2023) (PDF) and re-adopted The American Psychological Association’s Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Adults (2017).
Depressive Disorders
In addition, Magellan adopted the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Major Depressive Disorder (2022) as well readopting the American Psychological Association Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Depression Across Three Age Cohorts (2019), along with the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder, Third Edition.
Schizophrenia
Magellan readopted the American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Schizophrenia, Third Edition (2020).
Managing Suicidal Patients
Magellan also adopted The Department of Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guideline for the Assessment and Management of Patients at Risk for Suicide (2024).
Transgender Health
In addition, Magellan adopted the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People (Version 8, Chapter 18 Mental Health).
Previously adopted guidelines
The Magellan taskforce removed some previously adopted or developed guidelines from their regular review and update; however, these remain available to providers on our website as portions of the documents are pertinent to current clinical practice.
