2020 patient safety survey results demonstrate improvement in care coordination

Human Affairs International of California (HAI-CA, a Magellan* subsidiary) recently tabulated the results of its annual patient safety survey applicable to California inpatient and residential facilities, plus psychiatrists, across its behavioral health network.

Aggregate results for 2020 were generally positive, as shown below.

2020 results compared to 2019 results

In the following tables, the percentage of positive responses represents providers who responded “always” or “often.”

Survey formulation

Magellan developed its 15-question patient safety survey based on:

  • A review of current accreditation standards
  • Discussions with internal and external practitioners, and representatives from contracted facilities
  • A thorough review of current literature
  • Consultation with the National Association of Psychiatric Hospital Systems (NAPHS).

Making a difference in patient care

As shown above, 2020 generally saw improved outcomes in coordination of care at discharge and at times of transitions of care, both within behavioral health, and between medical and behavioral health services, and medication management. Throughout 2020, HAI-CA maintained quality improvement activities to address these areas.

We will continue to work with providers to emphasize the importance of thorough patient safety, coordination of care and medication management practices—all of which help improve patient care outcomes.
